About the National Skills Test (NST)

The National Skills Test (NST) is a national-level entry test by Tata Indian Institute of Skills (Tata IIS). It provides students, first-time job seekers, and eligible working professionals seeking upskilling a fair, transparent, and merit-based pathway into skill-based learning and career opportunities.

NST is for candidates who have completed or are pursuing:

  • 10th or 12th
  • ITI
  • Diploma in Engineering
  • B.E / B.Tech
  • Non-Technical Graduation

Working professionals may also apply for upskilling, provided they meet the age limits and program-specific eligibility criteria.

About the Test

NST assesses a candidate’s readiness for skill-based learning through:

  • Behavioural Skills (for all programs)
  • Maths and Reasoning
  • English communication (for select programs)
  • Technical Basics such as mechanical, electrical, and physics fundamentals (for advanced programs)

The sections included depend on the program applied for.

NST includes objective questions that assess aptitude, problem-solving ability, logical thinking, numerical understanding, communication readiness, and foundational technical concepts (where applicable).

No. NST does not require coaching or syllabus-based preparation. It is designed to assess aptitude and learning readiness, not rote memorisation.

  • Mode: Computer-based test

NST registration fees start at ₹99, with different fee categories applicable based on qualification, gender, and reservation criteria.

(The registration/assessment fee is non-refundable and is separate from program fees.)

Once a candidate qualifies NST and receives an admission offer, program fees are paid in stages (installments) depending on the program duration:

  • 3-month programs: 2 instalments after admission confirmation
  • 6-month programs: 3 instalments after admission confirmation
  • 12-month programs: 4 instalments after admission confirmation

An admission confirmation fee is paid first and is adjusted against the total program fee. Detailed instalment timelines are shared at the time of admission.

A short grace period is provided for genuine cases. Continued non-payment may temporarily restrict access to classes and learning resources until dues are cleared, as per institute policy.

After the Test

After the test:

  • A merit list is announced

    Eligible candidates are guided towards suitable Tata IIS programs

  • Counseling, seat allocation, and enrollment support are provided

Seat allocation is based on NST performance, eligibility criteria, and program availability, following a transparent and merit-based process.

The fee payment structure, including installment options and timelines, follows the Tata IIS fee policy and is communicated at the time of admission.

Yes. All NST-linked programs at Tata IIS are fully residential. The program fees include:

  • On-campus accommodation
  • Daily meals (food)
  • Local transport (where applicable)
  • Training essentials such as PPE kits, handbooks, and learning materials.

These facilities are provided to ensure a safe, focused, and structured learning environment.
